Legal Limbo

Doel is a village that had to make way for the expansion of the port of Antwerp. So from the 1960s onward, under the quiet pressure of a building freeze and an uncertain future, people left and the government bought up their homes one by one. The port expansion never happened. In 2022, former residents were offered the chance to buy their houses back. Nobody took them up on it. A handful of people still live here, surrounded by empty houses. A village stuck in legal limbo, erased before it disappeared.
